The term words of affirmation comes from Gary Chapman’s must-own book The 5 love languages.
If you’re not familiar with the book, the idea is that all of us speak a love language. This is how we both express love and how we receive love.
As well as words of affirmation, the love languages are
To put into context – for my birthday, my best “present” would be doing something with my husband.
Yes, quality time is my main love language.
My husband would love a massage.
No prizes for guessing that his is physical touch.
When you don’t speak someone’s love language, you don’t always hear it when someone is expressing love to you.
For example, imagine you’re having a hard time and your mother comes over, and rather than talk about your problems, she washes all your dirty dishes and does your laundry.
You might see that as a critique of your housework skills but she might be showing her love through acts of service.
So you need to know what love language you speak and what your husband speaks if you want to have a marriage where both people feel loved.
I never felt loved by my first husband as my primary love language used to be physical touch – and he was not affectionate to me at all.
It wasn’t until years later when I read Chapman’s book that I realized he did love me – just his way of showing it was not in a language I understood.

Why use words of affirmation?
So what does this all mean if your husband’s love language is words of affirmation?
Well, it means your I love yous and Thank yous will not be enough for him to feel truly loved.
You need to be detailed and specific.
You need to give compliments.
You need to verbalize those things about him that until now you’ve just been thinking.
But sometimes it’s super hard to think of the right things to say.
That’s why you’ll find here some words of affirmation for him for a variety of situations – from just because to when he’s having a hard time.
However, the best thing about these words of affirmation for him is that they’re not just restricted to those of you whose husband’s speak this love language.
All men love to have you tell them just how much they mean to you – all those reasons why you love them, their bodies, the things that they do, and how proud of them you are.
In fact, one of the indicators of marital happiness is that a couple has five positive interactions for every negative interaction (source).
Using these words of affirmation can help boost those positive interactions!
So express these words of love and encouragement to your man and see how he blossoms.
Words of affirmation to express your love
What is the sweetest thing you could say to your husband?
In my opinion it’s a simple affirmation of your love for him that isn’t tied to anything specific.
If you’re wanting to express your love, keep it romantic and sweet. Focus on your unconditional love for him, that he’s your soulmate and that being with him just makes everything better.

Words of affirmation about his appearance
We live in an appearance-centered society. I know I’m not shallow and yet I also know that I feel more confident and self-assured when I feel like I look good.
I feel even better when somebody else notices.
Think about it – can you remember a time when you spent a lot of effort getting ready for a special occasion, you walked out to the living room, and your husband didn’t even comment?
Or worse – when you were forced to ask how you looked, he answered that you looked fine?
Remember that feeling and vow not to ever do the same thing. Instead, use some of these words of affirmation focused around his appearance.
Examples
- You look hot
- You’re looking delicious today
- I love how that [insert clothing item] looks on you
- Love your butt
- I could just look at you all day
- Have you been working out?
- Your muscles look bigger
- You look strong
- You were the best looking guy in the room
- You’re the hottest man I’ve ever had
- I love your new haircut
- Your eyes are beautiful
- Looking at you makes me want to get naked
- That shirt brings out the color of your eyes
- Love that new shirt!
Words of affirmation about making love
Men can be more insecure than we can imagine, and one place this insecurity can make itself known is in relation to the bedroom. If this is the case, your positive affirmation (as well as your obvious enthusiasm and enjoyment) can be crucial.
Even if your husband is super confident in bed, every man likes to be praised on his prowess.
These examples of words of affirmation focused on the bedroom work well in both situations. (And if you’re comfortable with it, use more explicit language than I’ve used here).
Examples
- I love making love with you
- I want to make love to you
- You’re the best lover I’ve ever had
- I love it when you touch me there
- You make me feel so good
- You make me want you so badly
- You feel amazing
- You’re so good in bed
- You’re such a good kisser
- I love your touch
Words of affirmation to show your appreciation
One of the worst things you can do is to take someone for granted. It’s a quick recipe which results in him feeling resentful and you feeling complacent.
Showing your appreciation for the one you love is so important. It shows you notice what he does for you – and that you’re grateful for it.
Here’s appreciation centered words of affirmation:
Examples
- I’m so grateful for you
- You did a great job on [insert task]
- Thank you so much for doing that
- Thank you for fixing [insert thing]
- Thank you for making that appointment
- I like how you sorted that out
- I really like how you [insert thing]
- I appreciate all you do for me
- You’re such a hard worker
- You work so hard for us
- I love that I can trust you to take care of things
- The [thing he did] looks amazing!
- Thanks for helping me with [insert thing]
- I felt really supported when you helped me earlier
- I love how caring you are with me / the kids / the furbabies
Words of affirmation when he’s going through a stressful time
When things are tough, it can be hard to think of the right thing to say. You want to be encouraging and supportive without slipping into advice giving or “just get on with it” type conversations.
Remind him that he had what he needs inside himself. If you’ve been together a while, you’ll know of tough times he’s beaten in the past. Remind him of these also, and also the strategies he used then, if they’re applicable.
Any of these words of affirmation examples will also work in this situation.
Examples
- I’m so proud of you
- You can do this
- This is tough, but you’ve done tough before and you’ve survived
- I believe in you
- You can get through this
- You’ve got this
- I know you can figure this out
- You’ve got what it takes to make this work
- You’re doing the right thing
- You’ve made the right decision
- You can fix this
- I so respect how you’re handling this
- You’ve got what it takes
- I trust you
- You’ve done it before; you can do it again (our personal favorite!)

“Well, it means your I love yous and Thank yous will not be enough for him to feel truly loved”
“You need to give compliments.”
“You need to verbalize those things about him that until now you’ve just been thinking.”
“All men love to have you tell them just how much they mean to you – how much you love them, their bodies, the things that they do, and how proud of them you are.”
Wow, you are SOO spot on! As a man, I melt just thinking about my wife saying some of the things in this article to me more regularly. I’m sure she thinks many of them, but like you say we need to actually hear the words! When we don’t hear them regularly it gets SO easy to doubt them, and hard to say things like this ourselves as well. Great stuff!

Oh my word! You are the best. Thank you for describing this in detail. I’m from Uganda ?? in East Africa and have an amazing boyfriend but didn’t know where to start to let him know how much I appreciate him and love him. I’ve been trying to figure out his love language and it hasn’t been easy. At some point I asked him what his love language was and he said “all of them!” Hahahahah
Thank you so so much
This is a good start.
