If you’re a busy couple, you might find it hard to make time to intentionally connect.

That’s especially the case if you limit yourself to “traditional” date night time, like weekend nights.

However, no such limits are necessary.

My husband and I were both school teachers for many years. Sometimes, when we worked at the same school, we would grab lunch together.

The opportunity to connect during the day was always treasured, even if it was a little rushed.

Then, after we both transitioned out of school and into being public servants, we were lucky enough to work mere minutes from each other in the CBD.

When we were both having a slow day, we’d often meet up for lunch – taking the opportunity to enjoy new places to eat, areas to explore, and sneakers to purchase.

One day we even discovered the in-situ exhibit of a 150-year-old wooden sailing ship that was covered when an earthquake raised the land, and later discovered when a historical building was excavated.

As you can see from my own experience, your lunch breaks can be transformed into meaningful moments spent with your loved one.

By embracing these lunch date ideas, you’ll no longer need to put all your date night eggs into the weekend basket.

(These morning date ideas, weeknight date ideas and late night date ideas are good for shaking it up a little too!).

Tips for a fun lunch date

I’m imagining that most of you reading this article are like me and interested in date ideas that you can fit in your lunch break when one or both of you are working.

The tips below and the lunch date ideas are generally based on this premise.

  • Be time-conscious. Even if both of you have flexible schedules, you’re likely to have to go back to work: Since lunch breaks are typically about an hour, be mindful of time and plan activities that can comfortably fit within that timeframe. Opt for activities that are nearby to avoid wasting time on long commutes
  • Make reservations and/ or order ahead: If you plan to dine out during your lunch date, it’s a good idea to make reservations or order in advance to avoid being disappointed by fully booked restaurants or waiting to have your food made
  • Disconnect from work: Use your lunch date as an opportunity to disconnect from work-related stress. Avoid checking emails or discussing work matters during this time, and focus on being present and enjoying quality time with your partner
  • Be open to trying new things: Use lunch dates as a chance to explore new activities, cuisines, or locations right on your doorstep that you often would miss in the rush
  • Utilize lunchtime specials or deals: Many restaurants and venues offer lunchtime specials or discounts. Take advantage of these deals to make the most of your budget while enjoying a great dining experience or activity.
