Tips for an awesome 80s date night
Make tonight one for the history books! From retro arcade games to roller skating, here’s tips for an awesome 80s date night.

The 80s hold a special place in my heart. In 1980, I was six. When the decade closed, I was about to turn 16.
I grew up a lot in those years, amongst a background of big hair and blockbusters, the Cold War and the AIDS crisis.
And as far as relationships with boys went, there were a lot of firsts. My first kiss. My first love. My first heartbreak (D.R, that was you).
Just as well I had those 80s power ballads to cry my heart out to.
It was also the decade of the first date, though to be honest, in small town New Zealand there wasn’t a lot of what you would recognize as a “date” going on.
Instead think of a group of about ten to 15 teens, depending on the circumference of the friend circle, all going to one house after school, sitting out in the sun, talking, laughing. And of course, listening to the boys’ band practice.
Oh, crazy times.
Sentimentality aside, I don’t think there’s any decade that felt more fun than the 80s.
And whether you’re wanting to channel the nostalgia for years gone by, or are fascinated by a decade characterized by an over-representation of fashion crimes, this 80s date night will deliver.
It’s time to don your best acid-washed jeans, layer those leg warmers and get ready to embrace the spirit of this iconic decade.

From Brat Pack to blockbusters: Iconic 80s movies to watch

The 80s seemed to have a slew of movies that were kids against adults kind of vibes and as I was coming of age when 80s coming of age films were … coming out, it’s no wonder I was so into them.
I’m thinking Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Goonies, The Outsiders.
I watched Ferris Bueller on a bootleg video so many times, I can still quote many classic lines like, “Never had one lesson,” “So that’s how it is in their family,” and (chant it), “When Cameron was in Egypt’s land / let my Cameron go.”
I wrote a heartfelt love letter to Corey Feldman after watching his performance in The Goonies. Unfortunately, he never wrote me back.
And The Outsiders – after the movie, I ordered the novel from the UK. The cover featured the stars – men that went on to do amazing things in film. I thought that book was one of the most beautiful I ever read.
Watching an 80s movie is a must-do in your 80s date night.
My recommended 80s movies include the following:
- Back to the Future
- Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure
- Blade Runner

Setting the mood with the soundtrack to the 80s

The 80s were a time when synthesizers ruled the airwaves and iconic anthems filled the dance floors and as such, must be incorporated into your 80s date night.
While I look back with a a sense of bewilderment and horror at 80s fashion, there’s no doubt that 80s music left a mark on my soul that will never be erased.
In New Zealand, we used to have a tv show called “Ready to Roll” – later shortened to the much cooler “RTR Countdown.” This show would count down the top 20 hits of the week, randomly playing some before ending on number 1.
Oh the excitement as I waited to see if my current fave would make it to the coveted number 1 spot.
Saturday nights at 6pm would never get more thrilling.
Even now the sound of synthesizers gets the dopamine flowing.
Whether you want to enjoy the music as a background, watch some ancient cringe worthy videos, or have an 80s disco for two, 80s music is a non-negotiable in your date.
Of course, in a decade there’s a lot of beauties to pick from.
The number one seems like a logical choice, but finding the number one hit of each year was surprisingly challenging, therefore I have given you the number 1 song in the USA on or as near to October 25 as I could get for reasons only known to myself (okay, it’s my husband’s birthday).
(Here’s where I’d start if you want to search for other dates in the 80s)
1980: Woman in love – Barbra Streisand
1981: Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do) – Christopher Cross
1982: Jack and Diane – John Cougar
1983: Total eclipse of the heart – Bonnie Tyler
1984: I just called to say I love you – Stevie Wonder
1985: Saving all my love for you – Whitney Houston
1986: True colors – Cyndi Lauper
1987: Bad- Michael Jackson
1988: A groovy kind of love – Phil Collins
1989: Miss you much _ Janet Jackson
