Muffins. The word was purportedly first used in the UK in 1703 – with the spelling “moofin,” which I think should make a comeback, particularly considering that muffins are frequently consumed along with drinks with milk in them. Cows go moo, ergo, it fits.

Just over 50 years later, the street-seller of muffins, aka The Muffin Man, was immortalized in a 1754 poem, and some 70 years after that, the nursery rhyme, The Muffin Man, had all the children running for Drury Lane. With that, muffins became firmly part of our lexicon.

And although these tidbits of history are referring to the more crumpet shaped- tasty flatbread that is known as the traditional English muffin, I find it much more entertaining to envision a man walking with one of those trays in front of him like they used to have at the movies, laden with all kinds of what we often call American muffins – chocolate, coffee and walnut, and of course, blueberry – passing them out to all the children with a twinkle in his eye (and not malice in his heart – check out the urban legend connected with the rhyme if you don’t know what I’m talking about).

I mean, there is little more satisfying a morning tea treat than the muffin, especially one warm from the oven and baked by your own hand.

And while blueberry muffins can be challenging to make (you’ll want to make sure the berries don’t sink to the bottom for one), the reward is great.

So to indulge you moofin lovers out there with more muffin recipes than you could make in a month of Sunday’s, here’s my collection of 25 blueberry muffin recipes.
