A self-care tool kit is your go-to stash when things are bad. It’s that collection of items designed to nurture and nourish the child in you that at this point needs something to make them feel like everything is going to be alright. Find out how to create your own self-care tool kit today!
When we’re most in need of self-care, we’re the least capable of providing ourselves with it.
Either we’re on the verge of exhaustion, emotional collapse, OR whatever it is that has happened has hit us so hard from left field, we’re blindsided.
It is my belief that you are best to be ready for those days when you need some high-quality self-care STAT.
How? you ask.
By preparing a self-care toolkit.
A self-care tool kit is your go-to stash when things are bad. It’s that collection of items designed to nurture and nourish the child in you that at this point needs something to make them feel like everything is going to be alright.
So when it comes to collecting your self care essentials, I suggest you cover the following aspects
- a cuddly throw / blanket
- scented candles
- bath products
- self-care literature
- items designed to boost your confidence and / or start to attract positive energy into your life
- guided meditations
- hot drink of your choice
With the exception of the guided meditations, it is my recommendation that you store your self-care items in a specific place in a specific container.
These items are special, but they will not be special if they are used every day. So deny yourself the urge to use them until you actually need them. Then they can work their magic!
(And as an aside – these ideas would make awesome gifts for anyone going through a tough time).

Are you ready?
Snuggle up tight
When we’re in need of self-care, we’re in need of physical comfort. When I’m feeling like I need a self-care boost, the comfy clothes are the first things that get put on. Hello elasticated pants, thick socks and slipper boots!
To add to this layer of comfort, the first item in your self-care toolkit should be your special blanket, so that you can snuggle into it on the couch or on top of your bed.
INDULGE SIGHT AND SCENT WITH CANDLES
Watching the flicker of candlelight is one of those soothing, primeval activities that is guaranteed to soothe an unquiet mind.
Add together the benefit of scent, and you are in for a winner.
You’ll have scents you prefer, but I don’t think you can go past vanilla or lavender as a self-care choice. I also love citrus scents, particularly orange, and find those useful to gain a clear head.
BLISS OUT IN THE BATH
I’ve always been a regular bath taker. I fill up the tub, light some candles and read a book, letting the warmth of the water relax me. At one home I lived in for a while, the bathroom was upstairs. I would open the window so I could look out at the stars.
Even now I can close my eyes and see myself back in that bath, feeling all my cares soak away.
Therefore I do not believe that any self-respecting self-care toolkit would be complete without something for the bath.
Even writing the words “self-help literature” makes me think of Bridget Jones’ Diary, and night’s spent crying while singing “All by myself.”
That aside, self-help literature presents you with a different perspective which is often what you need when you are in the need of self-care.
Below is a selection of top rated self-help literature on Amazon.
If you really wouldn’t see this as a treat, however, I suggest you add to your self care box a book that you’ve been holding off reading, or one or two of your fave or most-wanted magazines.
FEEL GOOD, ATTRACT GOOD.
I’m in love with these two products here: The Confidence Box and The Law of Attraction box.
Both of these help you focus on the things you CAN control.
Boost your confidence with The Confidence Box. Focus on the past, present and future moments that let your confidence shine.
Channel the Law of Attraction. Create a vision for your best life.
Think forward – not on what’s just happened.
GET SOME GUIDED MEDITATION ON
Meditation can help reduce stress, regain focus, and improve immune health. While you’re not going to gain those benefits from a one off session, you will find the process of focusing, listening, breathing, beneficial to your current state.
There are two different guided meditations below – the first is just five minutes, which is a good option if you are new to meditation or doubt your ability to focus for long. The second is longer at almost 20 minutes. It focuses specifically on relaxation.
SIP SOME SWEETNESS
There’s something supremely comforting about a hot drink.
A hot cocoa can take you back to childhood with its sweet, chocolately taste. You’ll feel safe and secure.
A cup of tea can hit the spot. There’s not much that a cuppa can’t cure, according to the British!
Or simply enjoy the aromas of your favorite coffee.
