If you’ve never used affirmations before, you might think they’re the purview of people with a quirky, alternative approach to life that you can’t quite relate to. But if you did think that, you’d be missing out on something powerful, grounding, even life changing.

I’ve used affirmations on and off all my life.

My most vivid memory of using affirmations was when I was 29.

I’d split up from the man I’d been living with (that I would later return to and marry – up there with my all-time stupid decisions).

I was living in a budget rental six doors down from a meth lab, doing it tough with my two young kids, wondering how, when only five years before I’d thought I had it all figured out with Husband Number 1, I was now the living definition of a hot mess.

Finding time to take care of myself at this time was challenging, but one weekend I painted my toenails a cherry red that made me feel good whenever I looked down at my feet.

It was summer. To save gas, I walked when I could. I developed an affirmation that I would say to myself in time with every step: “I am Katie with shiny red toes and I am okay.”

I said it over and over until I began to believe that I would be okay.

And I was …  until we got back together.

But that’s another story.

Years past, and I stopped saying affirmations. Life got hectic and I shut out the space for them in my life.

That was until I started the Miracle Morning.

Affirmations are a key part of the Miracle Morning routine. However when it came to knowing what to say during this routine, I was lost.

I found myself searching for a list of positive affirmations to start my day with that would cover the various categories of my life that I wanted to focus on.

Using morning affirmations has benefited my life in a multitude of ways.

What are affirmations?

But let’s back up the bus.

If you’re unsure as to the definition of an affirmation, it’s simply a statement which declares something to be true, even though it may or may not yet be true.

These statements are usually connected to things that you want or goals that you have set.

How do affirmations work?

Most of the time we are thinking.

And a surprising number of those thoughts are negative.

In fact, research suggests that we have about 80,000% thoughts a day. Of those, some 90% are the same thoughts we have had before and some 80% – yes 80% – are negative (source).

You’re fat, you’re a failure, you messed something up – it’s hard to be happy when you’re hating on yourself all the time.

So positive morning affirmations are one way of countering these negative thoughts. 

In this way they can motivate you, encourage you, and remind you of what your wants and goals are.

I also believe that affirmations put into the universe a statement of intent, that, if you are taking active steps towards achieving that intent, can help it come into being.

Blame my quirky, alternative side for that one.

Why morning affirmations?

There are several good reasons for saying your affirmations in the morning.

  1. You are more likely to say them than you are if you leave it until later in the day when things gets busy 
  2. You set a positive and uplifting tone for your day
  3. You are more likely to believe your affirmations before the day reinforces your reality

That’s why I love morning affirmations to start the day with.

A warning about affirmations

As I mentioned above, you should be able to connect to your positive morning affirmation because you are working towards it in some way.

If you are broke, single, and depressed, imagining life as a married billionaire on top of the world might seem a little bit too much of a stretch. This can cause you to feel more of a failure than you already do.

Therefore as you read through this list of positive morning affirmations, go slowly.

Read them over and over and select those which resonate with you. 

You’ll feel a sense that “this is right” when you get the right one.

Then copy it down so you can add it to your own Miracle Morning affirmation list, or your simple morning routine.

In my time I’ve drunk too much, smoked too much, loved too much. I’ve hurt my body and I’ve hurt my soul.

However even when you’ve changed these kind of negative behaviors, like I have, it can be super hard to forgive yourself for the choosing ways of coping that were all you knew at the time.

So many times we’re our own worst enemy when it comes to success. If we have a down day where nothing goes right, suddenly our whole lives are crap.

If someone else is doing super well, we fear they’ve taken our chance away.

I am a firm believer that consistent effort (the right kind) will get you to where you want to go. Most people who set goals and don’t give up do achieve them. They might just be off on how long they thought it would take.

When I first started blogging, I thought that by the end of my first year I would have 100,000 page views a month.

Well, I was lucky to have 1000.

But now, less than two years after that – I’ve surpassed that page view goal. 

If I hadn’t kept believing in myself, and kept working, well – you wouldn’t be reading this right now!
