The story behind this horror subscription box

If you’re old enough to remember 1999, two things probably stick in your memory – one that the Y2K bug was going to wipe out civilization as we knew it, and two, that The Blair Witch Project had you doubting everything you thought you (dis)believed about ghosts and witches.

If you’re a little younger or want a memory refresh, let me get you up to speed.

The Blair Witch Project is a mockumentary that uses found footage purportedly filmed in 1994 and recovered a year later. The footage belonged to three student filmmakers who went missing while in the Black Hills near Burkittsville, Maryland. What makes it truly terrifying is that the three were in the hills to film a documentary about a local legend known as the Blair Witch – and it’s this legend that is credited with their disappearance.

This is because between the 18th and 20th centuries, more than a few residents of “Blair”, (a fictitious town on the site of Burkittville, Maryland) had been killed or simply disappeared. The ghost of Elly Kedward, a Blair resident who had been accused to practicing witchcraft back in 1785 and was sentenced to death by exposure, is believed to be responsible.

Thanks to some tricky and cunning posters, interviews and even IMDB entries which initially stated the actors as “missing,” more than a few viewers of the film believed it was 100% legit (in fact, I still remember getting into a rather heated argument with one of my friends about it).

What is Hunt a Killer: Blair Witch?

Now thanks to Hunt a Killer: Blair Witch, you too can experience the supernatural forces of the Blair Witch like never before!

Hunt a Killer, for those not familiar with the company, is a monthly murder mystery subscription box that happens to be one of my favorite at home date ideas (you can read my experience of Hunt a Killer here).

You help a local detective by analyzing clues in order to uncover a killer. The murder mystery unfolds over six boxes, which creates a season with its own unique storyline. With over 2 million boxes shipped, it’s safe to say these people know how to create a fun and entertaining experience.

Hunt a Killer: Blair Witch takes everything we know and love about the original game and crosses over into horror subscription box territory to create a unique and immersive experience.

Just like the original Hunt a Killer, Hunt a Killer: Blair Witch also unfolds over six episodes. And while you don’t need to have watched The Blair Witch Project, I 100% recommend it to kick start your evening of horror-filled fun!

How to play Hunt a killer: Blair Witch

The story begins with Rosemary Kent who lives on the edge of the Black Hills Forest. Rosemary’s teen son Luke has gone missing – and with local cops reaching a dead end, she turns to you for help.

Over the course of the six episodes, you investigate the woods and learn about the powerful forces that reside within there. While facing the horror of the Blair Witch, you put together the clues – and find out if you can survive the woods!

When you open the first box, you’ll find an envelope full of clues. Use the handy checklist to make sure nothing is missing.

Don’t forget the postcard which you’ll see as soon as you open the box (it’s not inside the yellow envelope), as it tells you exactly what you need to do in order to complete this episode of the Blair Witch horror subscription box.

It CAN seem a little overwhelming at first, so I suggest starting off by reading Rosemary’s letter.

Especially if this is your first time playing a tabletop mystery box, you can expect the first box to take over an hour or two to complete.

And with subscriptions starting at only $25 a month, it makes for an affordable at home date.

While it’s perfect for date night, Hunt a Killer: Blair Witch also makes a fun tabletop game for families with older children. You can also play it by yourself.

Start a Halloween subscription box tradition as one way to have fun with your spouse and make Hunt a Killer: Blair Witch the first one on your list!

This horror date night box should be added to your list of Halloween date ideas for couples.
