From Chicago to Southern Illinois, the state is home to some of the best and scariest attractions in the country. You’ll find basements, prisons, haunted houses and more.

Basement of the Dead – Aurora

Located about two hours west of Chicago, Aurora’s Basement of the Dead challenges you to navigate a real basement.

With a sense of fear having already been naturally activated during your walk through, your experience will be heightened by actors in authentic costumes and make-up just waiting to jump out of the dark.

With zombies, evil clowns and more, a visit to the Basement of the Dead is truly a haunted experience.


The 2021 season begins on Friday, September 24. The season runs from Friday to Sunday until October 3 and then Wednesday to Sunday through to October 31, with a bonus final night on November 6.

A general admission ticket costs $30.

You can get VIP admission for $45. VIP admission entitles you to go to the front of the line.

Statesville Haunted Prison – Lockport

After the inmates riot and the guards flee, an unholy alliance is left to run the Chicago-area correctional facility in Lockport – turning it into Statesville Haunted Prison.

As you try to escape the hellish haunted attraction, you’ll come eye-to-eye with creatures from beyond. It’s your responsibility to safely make it through the gauntlet of the maximum security cell block without becoming a permanent prisoner.

The haunted attraction is located about 50 minutes from Chicago.


The 2021 season begins on Friday, October 1. The season runs from Friday to Sunday the first weekend, and then Thursday to Sunday through to October 31.


A general admission ticket costs $30.

VIP admission is $45. VIP admission entitles you to skip the line in the tent and enter Statesville Haunted Prison through the little-to-no-wait line.

You can also purchase group tickets but these must be 1) purchased online and 2) redeemed on a Thursday night. All tickets must be redeemed at the same time.

HellsGate Haunted House – Lockport

Hellsgate Haunted House is one of the Chicago metro area’s outstanding haunted attractions.

Located in the woods, adding more than a little authenticity, the haunted house is a multi-level attraction with several fear-inducing encounters, such as the undead.

The house is also known for its giant slide.

A visit to Hellsgate Haunted House is a true trip into backwoods fear.


Hellsgate Haunted House is open 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm September 30 and October 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, 27, 28 andHalloween Night.

On October 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 & 30, it is open from 7.00pm – 11pm.


There’s a huge range of ticket prices and deals available, including the ability to mark one of your friends or family for some special attention, so you’ll want to check out the ticket page carefully.

However, you can pick up a standard general admission ticket for $30.

A VIP ticket will cost you $45 to get you little to no wait in line.

An Instant Entry ticket will see you as the next group in and set you back $65 per person.

Necrosis Haunted House – Rantoul

The Champaign-Urbana area is home to a scary haunted attraction in Rantoul.

Necrosis Haunted House is home to truly evil beings thirsting for victims… and where the line between the living and the dead is rotting away.

As you explore the home where the undead rule, you’ll be challenged to safely make your way through the house.


The Necrosis Haunted House is open from Friday-Saturday every weekend in October.


Tickets are on the cheaper side compared to the previous attractions, with general admission tickets costing $20 and VIP admission tickets costing $35.

Spook Hollow – Peoria

There’s an old marketing saying that goes along the lines of “Will it play in Peoria?”

When it comes to haunted attractions, you can  bet you bottom dollar that it plays…and scares.

Into its fifth decade, Spook Hollow is home to three haunted attractions in one location.

Check out the woods of Independence Park for a scarily good time.

Travel through Spook Hollow, an outdoor haunt that challenges your sanity as you navigate your way through the woods while searching for the undead and any evil spirits that may be haunting the area.

If you don’t end up a meal for the undead, check out both MC Manor (a haunted house) and MC Nightmare, which may cause insomnia post this nightmarish adventure.

Each attraction doesn’t take long to complete. , meaning you can cover all 3 in a night.


The 2021 Season dates are October 15- 16, 22 – 23, and 29 – 30. The ticket gate is open from 6:30pm to 11pm.


General admission is $30 and a speed pass is $45.

One admission price gets you into all three haunted attractions.

Undead Acres – Monee

Imagine strolling through a nursery in total darkness, praying not to encounter the zombies and other undead characters that may roam Undead Acres in Monee.

You’ll feel the hair on the back of your neck stand up as you’re positive you brushed against someone…or something… not of this world.

The caretaker escorts you into the nursery, then all bets are off on making it out alive – or at least without being frightened.

Undead Acres is also home to zombie paintball. Acceptable for people of all ages, you’ll ride in a wagon as you pick off zombies roaming the land.

Guests are not shot with paintball weapons during the ride, just in case you were worried.

Undead Acres also features a shooting gallery and air cannon to take out corn stalks. The attraction is located about 45 minutes south of Chicago.


Undead acres is open from September 24th through October 31, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.


Zombie Paintball will set you back $26, and there are variety of combos and deals available, so make sure you check out the prices page.

The Terror Trail is closed for this year.

Sinister Acres – DeSoto

Southern Illinois is the setting for Sinister Acres, where you can check out two haunted attractions in one location.

Legend has it that deranged serial killer Otis Hodge offered his property, Sinister House, as a sanctuary for fellow serial killers, mass murderers and other criminal elements seeking refuge.

For more than three decades, debauchery was the word of the day on the Hodge property. But, as time passed, Hodge and his guests faded away.

Or did they?

Long before Sinister Acres was home to notorious serial killer Otis Hodge, it was home to a much older and ancient evil. Early pioneers in the region and native tribes would tell stories of a race of human-like creatures that lived in the forest and ate the flesh of those unlucky enough to wander into their lair.


At the time of updating this post, the schedule for 2021 has yet to be released. However in the past, the haunted attraction is open Friday and Saturday nights in October.


Like the dates, the prices have yet to be confirmed, but in 2020, general admission was $18.00, with an extra $5.00 required for a fast pass upgrade.

Factory of Fear – Moline

The Quad Cities’ Moline is the site of Factory of Fear.

With more than 30 rooms of sheer terror awaiting, you’ll need to be on guard for things that go bump in the night, as well as what may be lurking in the shadows.

After more than 25 years of scaring people, making it one of the oldest haunted houses in Illinois, Factory of Fear is sure to bring on more frights this season.


The attraction is open on September 24 and 25, and then every Friday-Sunday from October 1 -October 31.


General admission is $25 on Friday and Saturday and $22 on Sundays.

Twisted Crypt Haunted House – Rockford

Challenging all of your senses, Twisted Crypt Haunted House will make you question if you actually survived your encounter with evil.

A visit to any of the 10 interactive rooms will test your sense of smell, sight, sound and more, as you navigate your way through the haunted house.


Named as one of the best haunted attractions in Illinois, the nearly decade-old haunted house will open on September 17 and then every weekend therafter through to Halloween.


Tickets are $13 for general admission until 10/14, and $15 for general admission after 10/14.

Massacre Haunted House – Naperville

Are you ready to have your mind messed with?

Massacre Haunted House in the Chicago suburb of Naperville will test your willpower as you navigate through a maze of rooms filled with evil, the undead, and more.

With more than 60 rooms available to explore, the haunted house attraction is redesigned annually to keep visitors on their toes.

Bring your best evil-fighting skills, because you’ll need them to survive this encounter.


Located about an hour outside of Chicago, Massacre Haunted House opens around mid-September through to early November.


General admission is $29.99.
